Unwind | A Family Wellness Day

Unwind is a family-friendly celebration of National Wellness Month that invites youth and families to pause, recharge, and prepare for the new school year through wellness, creativity, movement, and community. As summer comes to a close, the International African American Museum welcomes guests of all ages to enjoy an afternoon dedicated to rest, reflection, and joyful connection while providing families with resources to help students begin the school year feeling supported and empowered.

This year's program explores how African and African American traditions continue to shape practices of healing, wellness, and collective care. Throughout the day, families can participate in hands-on creative experiences, guided wellness activities, movement and fitness demonstrations, playground games, and a sensory walk through the African Ancestors Memorial Garden designed to encourage mindfulness and reflection. Families preparing for the school year are also invited to benefit from the Museum's community school supply giveaway (available while supplies last), helping ensure local students have the tools they need for a successful return to the classroom.

The program also features community wellness partners dedicated to supporting healthy families. Amor Healing Kitchen explores the connection between nourishment, culture, and holistic wellness through food-centered education, while Sunflowers of Hope promotes health equity and community well-being through education, advocacy, and access to wellness resources. Together with additional community organizations, these partners create opportunities for families to discover practical approaches to healthy living rooted in culture, creativity, and care.

This program is made possible through the generous support of the Cravens Foundation.
