Join us for an enriching evening as part of the International African American Museum’s (IAAM) Fall Film Series as we delve into the importance and significance of preserving the stories of our ancestors. In harmony with our mission to share untold stories, this series spotlights some of the many challenges, successes, and efforts to safeguard our shared heritage. In collaboration with the Preservation Society of Charleston and Anson Street African Burial Ground Project, this inaugural program of the series features a screening of the compelling documentary, “Unmarked,” a film that explores the efforts of archivists, archaeologists, volunteers, and descendants in searching for and restoring African American cemeteries and burial sites throughout the South. Following the screening, we’ll engage in a thought-provoking dialogue with preservation experts from our esteemed partner organizations, delving into the ongoing efforts to protect Charleston’s sacred burial sites.
We invite you to join us on Thursday, September 12 as we explore the importance of preservation and our collective role as stewards and advocates of our community’s rich tapestry of stories.
Film Synopsis:
Much of America’s rich history is being lost to time. In the South, vast amounts of African-American grave sites and burial grounds for enslaved persons have been disappearing over the years. In Virginia alone, stories of thousands at rest could vanish from history altogether if these locations are not restored. Those with personal connections to these burial sites have recently begun to uncover and maintain locations across the state. However, there is much work to be done in order to preserve this part of America’s history. Unmarked not only explores these untold stories of the past but also the efforts underway to preserve them.
