The Spirit of Sankofa | Spoken Word Writing & Performance Workshop
Stemming from the Akan tribe in Ghana, the word Sankofa means ‘to retrieve’ or ‘go back and get it,’ and is often thought of in connection to an African proverb emphasizing the importance of knowing and preserving history and heritage. It embodies the act of understanding the past and using it to prepare for our future. For years, the words of many spoken word artists have contained elements of the proverb as they used their voices to preserve aspects of their cultural heritage, express themselves creatively, and champion causes of civil and human rights for the future. It is now time for us to prepare the next generation to learn from our collective past, lift as they climb, and plan for the future.
On January 15, the IAAM invites teens from across our community to join us for a spoken word workshop led by jessica Care moore. The workshop will provide training on writing and performance styles while also showcasing how we can all use the power of our voices to trace connections between the past, present, and future.
