Summer Film Series Presents | Hope of Escape
 

As the second installment of our Summer Film Series, the International African American Museum (IAAM) will feature the new and award-winning film, Hope of Escape. The Summer Film Series serves to showcase films that explore themes and topics from across African and African American history. A historical drama based on a true story of the experienced of enslaved mother [Diane] and daughter [Cornelia] in Charleston, SC, Hope of Escape shares their untold story while highlighting the resilience and strength displayed by many African Americans who overcame enslavement through the decision to escape to freedom.  

 

We invite you to join us on Thursday, May 30 for an outdoor screening in our African Ancestors Memorial Garden as we explore this story of resistance, resilience, and hope. Ticket purchases include complimentary popcorn, refreshments, and snacks.

Film Synopsis:

SYNOPSIS (100 WORDS): The patriarch of a rice plantation in Charleston, South Carolina abruptly dies, and his next of kin feud over the assets. A house servant all her life, Diana and her daughter are at the mercy of their new master who is conflicted about following his dead father’s wishes – that Diana should be free. A star-studded “cast” of historic characters include abolitionist Julia Williams; famous orator Henry Highland Garnet, and renowned abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison and Lewis Tappan. Now a rescue effort that involves hundreds of people offers a ray of hope as the countdown begins for Diana and Cornelia’s escape.
