A Conversation with Award-Winning Filmmaker | Julie Dash

Both African American women and women from across the global African diaspora have been defining cinema since the creation of the medium. Whether it be as actresses, film makers, writers, directors, etc., women of African descent have played a pivotal role in developing projects that challenge stereotypes, preserve our collective history and heritage, and present an authentic depiction of African and African American culture. Women such as award-winning filmmaker, director, writer, and producer, Julie Dash, have paved the way for future generations of creatives to join the industry.

Thirty-one years ago, Julie Dash broke through racial and gender boundaries with her Sundance award-wining film (Best Cinematography) Daughters of the Dust. She became the first African American woman to have a wide theatrical release of her feature film. Since then, she has continued to produce films and projects that not only explore African American history and culture, but also serve as an example for the many new filmmakers who have and will continue to follow in her footsteps. The IAAM invites you to join us on March 21 for a conversation with Julie Dash on her life, legacy, and career within the film industry. The conversation will be moderated by Malika Pryor, Chief Learning & Engagement Officer at the IAAM.

We encourage you to join one of the screenings of Dash's work, "Seeking: Mapping Our Gullah Geechee Story," in our Theater before the main event. Your timed ticket for the film will be provided upon your arrival (based on arrival time) with screenings scheduled at 6:15PM, 6:35PM, and 6:55PM. The conversation with Julie Dash will begin at 7:15PM.
