2024 Awakening of the Ancestors Through Music: We Are the Future That Our Ancestors Dreamed

A 90-minute participatory performance of Gullah Geechee songs and stories showcasing heritage, resilience, tenacity, faith, and creativity by Ron and Natalie Daise, followed by a 30-minute interactive facilitation by Sara Makeba Daise to engage the audience in understanding how the past, present, and future of Gullah Geechee people are aligned for greatness, legacy, and the embodiment of Sankofa.

This hybrid event will allow audiences to experience songs that were sung by African ancestors that continue to inspire worship and activism today throughout the Gullah Geechee Corridor, around the U.S., and the world. Guest speakers will not only demonstrate various musical styles, but will also share information on the historical, cultural and linguistic contexts of melodies, rhythms, lyrics and movements that can sometimes be traced back to specific regions in Africa. Join the International African American Museum (IAAM) on February 17 for the 2024 Awakening of the Ancestors Through Music: We Are the Future That Our Ancestors Dreamed.
